THE WORLD IS A PLACE
The Law of Diminishing Intent
Jim Rohn taught a principal which he called The Law of Diminishing Intent.
It might sound sort of fancy, but it just means that the longer you wait to do something, the less chance there is that you will actually do that thing.
And we all have ample experience of this.
For example, let’s say we get excited about something that a friend shared with us online – an invite to an activity of sorts. And so – in the moment – we express that excitement and maybe say something like “wow looks cool, I’d love to do that!”. And we say that, because that is actually how we feel…in the moment. We want to join that improv class, or bake that cake, or go for that hike. But then if we don’t make a firm commitment within that first day or two, then there’s a good chance that we never will. A week will go by, and then another and another until it’s just a forgotten memory.
And so this is of course not a good thing. Because if you want to do something in life, then do it. And if you don’t, then don’t. Life is too short to be indecisive and flaky.
So how then, do we tackle this matter?
Be brave
Yes brave.
When something sounds exciting but it’s out of your comfort zone, that’s the time to commit as soon as possible – to commit on the spot if you can! Don’t let fear control your life. Presuming you are able to attend, then just click attending, or type a text message confirming your attendance and hit send without second guessing yourself.
…get out of your comfort zone, because that’s where you’ll find excitement and experience growth.
Use your calendar
The next line of defence is using your calendar.
When you have something that you want or need to do but you can’t fit it in that day, then go to your calendar, find the first available time slot and add it in.
Doing that will mean that not only will it be more likely that you will follow through because you’ve now written it down, but you’ll also have one less thing on your mind. And that is very helpful in today’s hyper busy world.
Keep in mind though, that the law of diminishing intent is always at play. So the more time that passes, the less interest there will be around doing that task and therefore the less chance there will be of you actually following through. So, when using your calendar, it really should be the first available time slot.
John Maxwell who further explored the law of diminishing intent said that we have 48 hours to take action, otherwise it’s unlikely we ever will. So perhaps that gives you a better idea of how to prioritise your tasks.
Get a coach
You could also consider getting a coach, as a coach would hold you accountable and provide guidance along the way.
Or perhaps all you need is an accountability partner. Just bear in mind that at least one of you would have to be disciplined enough to keep the partnership going.
…
Conclusion…
The Law of Diminishing Intent is real. And now that you’ve read about it, you can’t ignore it’s significance.
So if you find that you are letting many opportunities pass you by then take this opportunity to make the choice to change things for the better. And to increase your accountability, either to yourself or to a buddy or a coach.
It really will level up your life.
